Oaxaca Old Fashioned

Created by Phil Ward at Death & Co in New York in 2007, the Oaxaca Old Fashioned reimagines the Old Fashioned with a Mexican soul. Blending tequila and mezcal gives it the perfect balance of smooth agave warmth and smoky depth. It’s become one of the most celebrated modern classics, often compared to the Tommy’s Margarita for its clean agave focus and to the Mezcal Negroni for its bold flavour.

FAQ
Can I make the Oaxaca Old Fashioned with just tequila?
Yes, but you’ll lose the smoky depth that mezcal brings. For a lighter, cleaner profile, try the Tommy’s Margarita instead.
What’s the best tequila to use in an Oaxaca Old Fashioned?
Reposado tequila is ideal because its oak aging mirrors the complexity of whiskey. It balances beautifully with mezcal, similar to how gin and vermouth work together in a Negroni.
How smoky should the drink be?
Only slightly – mezcal should complement, not dominate. If you prefer stronger smoke, you might enjoy the Mezcal Negroni or a classic Smoky Paloma.
What food pairs well with an Oaxaca Old Fashioned?
Its smoky sweetness pairs beautifully with grilled meats, chocolate desserts, or rich Mexican dishes – just as a Boulevardier pairs well with steak.
