Blood and Sand

The Blood and Sand cocktail blends together equal portions of Scotch whisky, cherry brandy, sweet vermouth and orange juice. It is believed that cherry brandy represents the "blood", while orange juice is the "sand".

The cocktail was inspired by the film ‘Blood and Sand’ which was released in 1922. Later, in 1930, the recipe appeared in Harry Craddock's cocktail book and since then it has become a time-honoured classic.

FAQ

What is a Blood and Sand cocktail?

A Scotch whisky cocktail shaken with sweet vermouth, cherry brandy, and fresh orange juice. It balances gentle smoke, ripe cherry, and bright citrus. If you prefer a stirred whisky classic, try the Manhattan.

Can I make it less sweet or more robust?

Yes. Reduce the cherry brandy a little or use a drier vermouth for a leaner profile. For a richer, spirit forward alternative, see the Rusty Nail. If you want more citrus bite, a Whiskey Sour hits that tart balance.

What Scotch works best?

A smooth blended Scotch is ideal. It supports the fruit without overwhelming it. Peaty single malts can dominate, so use lightly if you go that route.

How should I serve and garnish it?

Shake hard with ice, strain into a chilled coupe, and garnish with an orange twist or cherry to echo the drink’s fruit notes.

What cocktails are similar?

For whisky and vermouth with a bitter edge, try the Boulevardier. If you like classic, spirit forward whiskey builds, the Old Fashioned is another essential.
